CONSCIOUSNESS

'The effects of today's actions on the future must be taken into account so that future generations can also satisfy their needs’.

At the heart of our brand lies our brand values, we like to consider ourselves a caring and conscious company and although we are only getting started we feel it's important take as many small steps as we can.

Caring deeply for the planet, incorporating recyclable materials,  sourcing sustainable products and building a caring and considerate team are just a few ways in which we are continuously trying to do our best.

Conscious packaging

Our goods are delivered safely using recyclable or reusable materials. We use biodegradable packing peanuts in all our shipments. They are water soluble and leave no residue. Please place your packing peanuts in the sink and run water over them to dissolve. We also reuse most of our boxes and some packaging so although this may not look aesthetically pleasing this is part of our reuse, recycle and reduce initiative.

All our packaging in our collections is not yet as environmentally considerate as we want it to be however we are taking the steps necessary to be as mindful and conscious as possible.

In a bid to reduce waste,  our returns process is entirely online. Just know that we’re working on it, constantly.

Conscious product sourcing

We aim to source from suppliers who have a strong focus on environmental and sustainability initiatives. We consciously work with sustainable and natural materials with a focus on traditional methods of production, and this shapes our collections.

Much of our product lines consist of handmade products, recycled glass, recycled cotton, recycled and reclaimed woods, paper mache, natural materials such as sisal and linens and vintage pieces which not only tell a story but support our strong sustainability values.

There is a synergy between traditional handmade methods of production and sustainability. Many of our products involve traditional hand loom weaving, metal sculpting and craftmanship, basket weaving, traditional carpentry and traditional pottery making. These artisan methods of production are naturally more sustainable.

We assess the sustainability of our products based on the raw materials used to create them and the process in which they are made.

We are careful to work with natural materials and eco crops including hemp and jute. These are sustainable crops that grow with little need for pesticides and crops with a sustainable lifecycle of regeneration.

We also work with sustainably grown rattan, corn husk and water hyacinth. We choose to work with sustainable mango wood, this makes use of a harvested crop allowing space for replanting.

Conscious community

People matter most at House Barn from our customers to our team, our suppliers and the wider community in general. House Barn was founded on the values of caring and we celebrate diversity and cultural understanding.

We believe improvements can always be made and we want to continue to work hard employing informed and ethical practices. Every day we strive to do better and be better. We believe everyone should care more and as a company we are continually looking at ways to improve this further.
